The Pure Swings’ Reggie Smith and Ryan Lehr are offering a series of exclusive 1-day and 2-day hitting clinics throughout the United States for players ages 8 and up.
Reggie Smith is one of the most sought after hitting coaches in the game of baseball. With over 50 years of experience, Smith developed his knowledge and understanding while breaking in with the Boston Red Sox under the watchful eye of one of the greats hitters of all time, Hall of Famer, Ted Williams. After a playing career that included stints with the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers (where he won a World Series) and the San Francisco Giants, Smith retired second all time in home runs for switch hitters with 314 behind only the great Mickey Mantle. He began his coaching career with the Los Angeles Dodgers where he served as their Minor League Coordinator and Major League Hitting Instructor. Smith helped develop a record 5 consecutive National League “Rookies of the Year”, including recent Hall of Famer Mike Piazza, Raul Mondesi, Eric Karros, Todd Hollandsworth and Hideo Nomo. He was also responsible for the development of several other Major Leaguers including former Dodger, and current Padre, Matt Kemp.
Drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 8th round of the 1997 Amateur Draft, Ryan Lehr spent 12 years playing in the Minor Leagues where he retired with a .288 average and 84 Minor League homeruns. He was fortunate to play under former greats such as Frank Howard, Steve Yeager, Joe Ferguson and Tim Wallach. His playing career included stints with the Braves, Angels, Astros, Orioles and Royals organizations. He now works full time with Reggie Smith.
About our Clinics
Through informative video and interactive presentations, we will identify and discuss the common denominators that all great Major League hitters share. This includes an introduction to the process of natural hitting mechanics – vision, grip size, stance width, spine-angle, stride-length and swing mechanics.
The program emphasizes building a balanced and efficient swing from the ground up. Athletes have their own unique biomechanical structure. By analyzing the athlete’s body type and structure, we can identify their ideal athletic position to maximize performance and consistency. When hitters determine their optimal stance width, posture (spine angle) and grip size, the core and leg muscles become fully engaged dramatically increasing ground force reaction and rotation. As a result of being in balance, the bodies natural swing mechanics will occur in proper sequential order.
Players should learn and improve the following:
- How to set up in the batters box
- How to build their own ideal athletic and balanced stance
- How to develop the proper swing plane
- How to improve visual perception
- How to maximize use of the legs and core
- How to drive the ball to opposite field
- How to hit off-speed pitches
- How to increase their power
- How to improve bat speed
- How to correct fundamental hitting flaws
During each clinic, players will be divided into small groups to have their mechanics, plate set-up, swing plane and bat-speed analyzed. Specific recommendations and solutions will be offered that are tailored to each individual to enhance the players development of optimal balance and mechanics.
“As a five-time Major League Baseball All-Star, I have been around the best hitting coaches on the planet during my twenty year baseball career. With that being said, the work that Reggie Smith and Ryan Lehr are doing is at a different level. They are second to none and “in a league of their own!” – Mike Sweeney (Kansas City Royals Hall of Famer)
